Beach Spike Anchor: How to Secure Your Boat, Kayak or PWC on Shore

What Is a Beach Spike Anchor?

A beach spike anchor is a long steel spike designed to be driven into sand or soft ground along a shoreline, giving you a secure fixing point to tether a boat, kayak, PWC, or canoe while you're on the beach. Unlike conventional boat anchors that set on the bottom in water, a beach spike works on land — you push or hammer it into the sand, clip your tow rope to the top, and your craft stays exactly where you left it while the tide, wind, and current do their worst.

If you've ever come back from a swim to find your kayak halfway down the beach, a beach spike anchor is the solution.

The Anchor-Man Beach Spike Anchor

The Anchor-Man Beach Spike Anchor is built from pure carbon steel and 100% hot-dip galvanised for smooth finish and long-lasting corrosion resistance. At 9.6 lbs (4.3 kg), it's substantial enough to hold firm in wet beach sand but light enough to carry easily.

  • Pure carbon steel — strong enough to hold against tide and wind forces
  • 100% hot-dip galvanised — smooth surface, maximum rust resistance in saltwater environments
  • Includes anchor bungee — 3.2 x 7.9 inch bungee absorbs tension spikes so the spike doesn't loosen in shifting sand
  • PVC grip handle — just hold and pull upward to retrieve — no digging required
  • Compact storage — 39.4 inches long but slim — stores in a PWC storage compartment or kayak hatch
  • Recommended for: small to medium boats, kayaks, canoes, jet skis, PWCs, paddle boards

When Do You Need a Beach Spike?

Kayaking and Paddleboarding Stops

When you pull your kayak or SUP up onto a beach for a break, even a gentle onshore wind can send it drifting back into the water. A beach spike driven into wet sand behind the waterline keeps it secure so you can relax properly.

Jet Ski and PWC Beach Runs

Jet skis are especially vulnerable on beaches because the engine compartment faces damage if the craft is rolled by a wave or pushed sideways. A beach spike gives you a solid tether point so the PWC stays bow-on to the wave action.

Small Boat Shore Stops

If you're running a small aluminium boat or inflatable and want to pull up at a sandy bank for lunch or fishing, a beach spike gives you a secure mooring point without needing a dock or mooring ring.

How to Use a Beach Spike Anchor

  1. Locate a spot in firm, damp sand — dry loose sand above the tide line doesn't hold as well
  2. Push the spike in at a slight angle away from your boat (45° is ideal) — this resists the pull direction better than vertical
  3. Drive the spike at least 2/3 of its length into the sand — the deeper, the better the hold
  4. Attach your tow line or the included bungee to the top of the spike
  5. Tether your boat or PWC with enough slack for the tide to move it without jerking the spike loose
  6. To retrieve, grip the PVC handle at the top and pull upward — the smooth galvanised surface releases cleanly without digging

Beach Spike vs Traditional Anchor: Which Should You Use?

Traditional anchors are designed for water — they need depth and a seabed to set properly. On a beach, they're useless because there's nothing for them to dig into. A beach spike is the dedicated tool for shoreline securing. If you regularly beach your craft, a beach spike is an essential piece of kit that lives in your gear bag all season.
